Short film vs feature length film

I finished watching both films, and now I will be comparing the two. I personally preferred the full length feature film better, because I feel like it was easier to follow than the short film. I wrote about how the short film was kind of silent and hard to follow, if you were not paying attention. The full length also introduced us to more of characters than the short did. One of the characters we got introduced to was number one, he was one of my favorites, he was adorable. We also found out what they actually were, they were hand made dolls that are operated by mechanics. I really enjoyed his character arc, in the beginning he was a scaredy cat and was extremely fearful, but at the end he sacrificed himself to save the rest. We were also introduced to more of the machines than just the cat beast. The full length also had a way more decipherable plot, which made it easier to follow than the short. The short was also quite good, and I would recommend watching it for back plot. The short was definitely a little more confusing than the full length and had less development. I am quite happy that it got turned into a full length, because it was a lot more fun and better to watch. also the full length was more like WALL-E than the short, which made it even more enjoyable, to have something to compare it to

Research 9, the feature film

The full length film was amazing, and enjoyable. This film had so many great twists and turns, and they were really unexpected. Every time I thought it was going to end, or a scene was going to chang to something boring, something exciting would happen and peek my interest again. When the ninth doll woke up he did not really know what was going on. So he decided to explore and find out what was going on, he found out there were actually others like him. They told him everything that had happened, and said that they were hiding from machinery that was out to get them. Despite being the youngest nine kept trying to convince the others to stand up for themselves and stop hiding from the machines and end their reign of terror. They ended up defeating the machines and freed the other numbers as their "happy ending". The movie had a lot of great character development, one of my favorites was number ones development. In the beginning he was a hardheaded scaredy cat and very fearful, but in the end he sacrificed himself for the others, so that they would survive. Another one was number seven who was fearless and never stopped trying to defeat the machines, but sadly after a while she started to give up. The whole thing was fun and jampacked, it was sort of like an animated action film. We find out the only "people" left are the machines and dolls, in a post-apoclyptic setting. It also looked a lot more professional and well done than the short film, and you can definitely tell they spent their time on it.

research 9, the short

Today we watched the short film 9, the plot was quite confusing. I thoroughly enjoyed the animation style. It reminded me of the Disney film 'toy story' but if maybe someone like Tim Burton had written it. It reminds me of toy story because there was a robot cat kind of thing, that reminded me of one of characters toys which was a baby head on a spider robot body. It also reminded me a little bit of another Disney movie called 'Wall-E', because of the animation style. It also reminded me of Wall-E  because of the fact that in the beginning they were a trash pile, from what it looked like. The characters were very cute, they looked like little burlap sack dolls, or burlap sack minions, because of their eyes. The lighting used was mostly dark and eerie, and there was very little speech. The lighting was almost like they were in a dust storm, because of the clouds. The main protagonist is one of the burlap sack dolls who is called '9' and he is who the whole film was about. One of the main antagonists was the cat that I mentioned earlier, which also seemed to be a cats skull on robot spider legs. Which also added to the fact that it reminded me of Tim burtons style. The plot was quite hard to decipher, because there was not much speech, which made it hard to tell what was going on. So you have to pay really close attention, but once you start paying attention you're immediately hooked because the characters are so cute. They're like little trash dolls, but with personality and professionally made.

genre choice for film

In a previous blog, I mentioned that my partner and I were researching genres. From those we researched, we had to pick one where our film would fit perfectly. We ended up picking coming of age. We picked this one by thinking of the scenarios and instances that would go better with each genre. This genre was chosen because the type of film and storyline fit better with it. Coming of age provides a lot of different elements that are relatable to younger audiences. It would allow my partner and I to see what really makes an audience relate to this film. Even more so, it would help us to put our ideas out there. It would also help us improve more as filmmakers. Coming of age will show all the hardships she will go through. Those hardships all lead up to her finding herself and who she is. There will be incorporations of some drama and romance. These are only minor details forming her growth or “coming of age”. The main idea of the story is coming of age. Luckily there is no need to change the pitch. The pitch matches up with the genre perfectly. We will use what we researched while making the film. Now that I have those things sorted out I can continue on to the next step. I am so excited for what is to come!

genre research: coming of age, drama, and romance

genres i would like to research

Now that I have made my pitch I can start to explore genres where this film would fit in. As you can see, I am taking quite a shift from my previous project. This time around I will be researching the genres: coming of age, romance, and drama. I am researching these genres specifically because the film will possibly fall into one of these categories. In this new film contrasts in beliefs are presented. This then creates tension between the characters. We can stem out from those conflicts and create a whole drama film. There is also an idea that there is a young girl coming to a realization about herself. She is finding herself throughout the whole story and figuring herself out and learning the further she goes on. This, in turn, can be a coming of age film of her finding who she is. In the pitch, I mentioned that she will run off with her girlfriend. Everything she does could be for love. Maybe everything will tie into her love for her girlfriend. Having the whole film revolve around love which would make it a romance film. There are so many possible genres for it to fall into. We can't know for sure which one will be the one we go with. Depending on which approach my partner and I take while planning this film we can determine which genre it will be. I will be sharing the research next blog. After evaluating the research an discussing with my partner I will be able to determine the genre of the film.
