Editing: the sequel

We editited today because I couldn’t edit yesterday, because it’s my sisters birthday, she’s turning 19. I saved nagual some cake it was chocolate cake with chocolate frosting. And we had to run around town to find her cake because it was Christmas Eve and most stores closed at 6pm. Me and nagual editied over zoom and she shared her screen with me so taht I could have input too. We figured out where to put the songs and which scenes the songs went best with. We also cut some clips in half and placed them in different places just to experiment. We also had to edit in my voice in to some scenes, which was pretty cool because I had to film the voiceovers over zoom.

Editing: baking shows

We finally started editing today, there wasn’t that much to edit since I only sent nagual the final ones not every single one we filmed. The only difficult pet for today was deciding which Billie eilish song we wanted to use and where we were going to put it. We were thinking that maybe we could just split it up into different parts of the movie. Or maybe we could use multiple songs, because there are a lot that would be good for our film, because Billie eilish makes really chill/slow mellow music. So she’s a good singer to have in a coming of age movie, especially since she is close to our age. While we were editing we watched new baking shows on Netflix, I love baking shows they’re just so cute watch and fun especially the ones with people who can’t really bake. And also before I forget merry Christmas!!

Filming: day 2 switcheroo

We started filming, and decided to change a lot of stuff. Since it was like the middle of the night we couldn’t take the bus. So we decided to just film in my moms car because it was the only place available. Which does sort of change the narrative. We also decided to film my moms scenes with just her in the room, and me fill in with my voice later. We also changed some of the lines because some of them didn’t make sense in the places that they were. Our storyboard was extremely helpful but we did end up changing most of the camera angles because I couldn’t figure out how to get our phones to attach to the ceiling. We also had so many outtakes when me and micheka filmed our scenes and I literally used most of my storage.

Filming, back on track!

So after the fiasco of my friends not being able to film, I had to think fast and find replacements. My moms friends daughter said she could help and so did my mom. Which was really good. I was originally going to try and play my mom. My friend can’t film today so she’s gonna come another day. But we’re gonna film my moms scenes today. We filmed them but we had to refilm a lot of times because we kept making her laugh. She also kept forgetting her lines, which I have no idea why because her lines were not that hard. My mom thinks she’s a good actress but she has proved otherwise. She also decided to do her hair and makeup and I was like ma’am it’s not that serious. But I guess she wanted to look good for her movie debut.

Filming fiasco

So today me and nagual decided to start filming since we finally had all the supplies. Earlier we had decided to play the characters ourselves but we later decided to just our friends to do it, like we originally planned. So this morning I was was already to start filming like we had planned. And I asked my friends if they were still coming, and they all said no. None of them had asked their parents! So I was literally so angry. We had had this plan for so freaking long. They knew how important this was to me, because I kept telling them again and again. We literally spoke about it last night and they all said yeah. It just makes me so upset that they said they could come and they never even asked, because my time has just been wasted. I still have a few days to film but I wanted to get it done today so that it would be easier especially with more people.

Making a movie: shopping!!

Hey guys! Okay so today I’m going to go shopping for props because I thought I had them but I don’t. All I really need is a box and tripod, and a necklace. My mom said I can use her tripod and I think I’m going to make matching bracelets for rose and Carmen. But I’m gonna use an old necklace as the one Carmen gives rose. I think I’m just going to buy a box from dollar tree, because they have this new thing called craft corner with a ton of arts and crafts stuff. They have a lot of little treasure chests/ jewelry boxes so I’m gonna use one of those and just paint it to look nice. Speaking of painting, I actually made a clay mushroom it’s not the best but it’s so cute. And it’s sitting on my dresser table right now, when I get more clay I’m going to make more. I haven’t worked with clay in so long and I didn’t realise how hard of a medium to work with, I definitely like paint and canvases more.

Making a movie: decisions

So, my partner, Nagual and I have made the executive decision to play the roles ourselves. Because we decided taht would be easier than getting more people together. Especially during a pandemic with Florida having a lot of cases. I was looking at the news today and I think taht LA has the most cases. I wish we would just go into a tier 4 look some countries are. Because there’s no reasons for schools and work to be open right now. It should only be grocery stores and even those shouldn’t really be open. I’ve also so many people complain about masks and honestly I find it crazy because everytime I look bad you can only see half my face, which I think is a win. I don’t know why so many people don’t like it. I just hope that when Joe Biden becomes president he shuts the country down, because we need to get rid of the virus like other countries have. I don’t think people should make this “the new normal” like 2,000,000 people dying in 8 months isn’t normal it’s sad.

Making a movie: song rights!

I got my first response for song rights last week! I ended messaging Billie Eilishs manager and asked him if I could use some of her music. He was extremely polite and just asked if it would be for public or private use. I explained to him that it was a school film that would be posted online, but if he was still unsure I could send him the script. At first I was a little confused on what he meant by public or private, and whether or not our film fell under each category. So I emailed my teacher and he told me what to say. So I sent him what my teacher said and he still said it was fine. So that was really exciting!

Making a movie: reserving the rights

For our short film we want to have music in the background. But for us to be able use music from artists we will need their permission. I have been emailing artists and their managers for a while now, but nothing has come from it. So recently I just decided that maybe I would be better off messaging them on instagram. I just decided to use artists from my playlist and messaged them, about our film and asked if we would be able to use any of their songs. Sadly none of them have gotten back to us yet. I am mostly hoping for a response from Kali Uchis and Clairo because I really love their music, and I feel like it really fits with the film. I was really hoping to be able to get Billie Eilish music in our film because her song "my future" has the perfect vibes for our film. I think I might try twitter messages next and hopefully some more emails. I am quite upset that they do not check their emails very often, because this is really important to me, but I cant really be upset because they are extremely busy and probably get millions of messages a day.

(footage of me when I realise im probably not getting a response)

Marketing: Social Media style!

For the website we decided to make a new email, so everything for the film was under one umbrella. We then went ahead and started making social medias, so we could link them to our website. First we made our youtube account, where we will be posting behind the scenes videos. We decided to also vlog our fiming process so that people can watch and see what it is like to create a student short film. I am so excited to start filming so that we can vlog it. I think it will feel more exciting to watch the film, if you are also apart of the filming process. Next we made our instagram account, we folowed all of our other friends who are making films and ourselves, and the same with our twitter. Our instagram and twitter wont be as exciting as our youtube but we will try and make it as active as we possibly can. I think our facebook can be more active, with us posting our schedule and things,.

maeketing: making our website!

This week we started making our website! We fisrt had to choose a name for the film, because we had yet to choose one. At first we had thought about the name Carmen, because Carmen is a big part of the story. But then Nagual thought about the name her and her, but I did not really like that. So I was like ooh what if we make it her and her, but in a different language so it sounds better. We chose to make it in french because its the language of love. Then we went on wix.com and chose a template. We went through the film templates and chose which one we liked best. We chose a cute one with a deer, and a pink and mint green theme. Then we customised the themes and edited all of  the preset stuff. We chose a yellow and pink theme. Then once we were done we sent the link to a few friends and let them decide if they liked it, and they all said they did!

storyboard for short film

Storyboarding for this film was a lot harder than any of the other projects we have had to storyboard for. It was a lot of drawing involved, and having to refer back to the script to make sure they were exactly the same. We got a lot of scenes wrong. Like we had to keep stopping and erasing, because we had messed up some of the boxes. For example for the scene where Roses mom finds out, I had written that she found out from a note. But then once checking the script I realised she finds out by reading messages, so i had to change that. The worst part was having to keep referring back to the screenplay and having to make everything the same. It was also hard to remember the difference in lengths, because for the screenplay each page is 1 minute of screen time but for the storyboard each page is 30 seconds. So it was a little hard to stretch the pages for the storyboard, because it was mostly dialogue. I think the storyboard will make filming a lot more difficult, because it will be hard to get it exactly like how we drew it out. I think its going to be hard to get the angles we want, like the aerial. I think were probably gonna stand on a high surface then film that way.

Short film vs feature length film

I finished watching both films, and now I will be comparing the two. I personally preferred the full length feature film better, because I feel like it was easier to follow than the short film. I wrote about how the short film was kind of silent and hard to follow, if you were not paying attention. The full length also introduced us to more of characters than the short did. One of the characters we got introduced to was number one, he was one of my favorites, he was adorable. We also found out what they actually were, they were hand made dolls that are operated by mechanics. I really enjoyed his character arc, in the beginning he was a scaredy cat and was extremely fearful, but at the end he sacrificed himself to save the rest. We were also introduced to more of the machines than just the cat beast. The full length also had a way more decipherable plot, which made it easier to follow than the short. The short was also quite good, and I would recommend watching it for back plot. The short was definitely a little more confusing than the full length and had less development. I am quite happy that it got turned into a full length, because it was a lot more fun and better to watch. also the full length was more like WALL-E than the short, which made it even more enjoyable, to have something to compare it to

Research 9, the feature film

The full length film was amazing, and enjoyable. This film had so many great twists and turns, and they were really unexpected. Every time I thought it was going to end, or a scene was going to chang to something boring, something exciting would happen and peek my interest again. When the ninth doll woke up he did not really know what was going on. So he decided to explore and find out what was going on, he found out there were actually others like him. They told him everything that had happened, and said that they were hiding from machinery that was out to get them. Despite being the youngest nine kept trying to convince the others to stand up for themselves and stop hiding from the machines and end their reign of terror. They ended up defeating the machines and freed the other numbers as their "happy ending". The movie had a lot of great character development, one of my favorites was number ones development. In the beginning he was a hardheaded scaredy cat and very fearful, but in the end he sacrificed himself for the others, so that they would survive. Another one was number seven who was fearless and never stopped trying to defeat the machines, but sadly after a while she started to give up. The whole thing was fun and jampacked, it was sort of like an animated action film. We find out the only "people" left are the machines and dolls, in a post-apoclyptic setting. It also looked a lot more professional and well done than the short film, and you can definitely tell they spent their time on it.

research 9, the short

Today we watched the short film 9, the plot was quite confusing. I thoroughly enjoyed the animation style. It reminded me of the Disney film 'toy story' but if maybe someone like Tim Burton had written it. It reminds me of toy story because there was a robot cat kind of thing, that reminded me of one of characters toys which was a baby head on a spider robot body. It also reminded me a little bit of another Disney movie called 'Wall-E', because of the animation style. It also reminded me of Wall-E  because of the fact that in the beginning they were a trash pile, from what it looked like. The characters were very cute, they looked like little burlap sack dolls, or burlap sack minions, because of their eyes. The lighting used was mostly dark and eerie, and there was very little speech. The lighting was almost like they were in a dust storm, because of the clouds. The main protagonist is one of the burlap sack dolls who is called '9' and he is who the whole film was about. One of the main antagonists was the cat that I mentioned earlier, which also seemed to be a cats skull on robot spider legs. Which also added to the fact that it reminded me of Tim burtons style. The plot was quite hard to decipher, because there was not much speech, which made it hard to tell what was going on. So you have to pay really close attention, but once you start paying attention you're immediately hooked because the characters are so cute. They're like little trash dolls, but with personality and professionally made.

genre choice for film

In a previous blog, I mentioned that my partner and I were researching genres. From those we researched, we had to pick one where our film would fit perfectly. We ended up picking coming of age. We picked this one by thinking of the scenarios and instances that would go better with each genre. This genre was chosen because the type of film and storyline fit better with it. Coming of age provides a lot of different elements that are relatable to younger audiences. It would allow my partner and I to see what really makes an audience relate to this film. Even more so, it would help us to put our ideas out there. It would also help us improve more as filmmakers. Coming of age will show all the hardships she will go through. Those hardships all lead up to her finding herself and who she is. There will be incorporations of some drama and romance. These are only minor details forming her growth or “coming of age”. The main idea of the story is coming of age. Luckily there is no need to change the pitch. The pitch matches up with the genre perfectly. We will use what we researched while making the film. Now that I have those things sorted out I can continue on to the next step. I am so excited for what is to come!

genre research: coming of age, drama, and romance

<

genres i would like to research

Now that I have made my pitch I can start to explore genres where this film would fit in. As you can see, I am taking quite a shift from my previous project. This time around I will be researching the genres: coming of age, romance, and drama. I am researching these genres specifically because the film will possibly fall into one of these categories. In this new film contrasts in beliefs are presented. This then creates tension between the characters. We can stem out from those conflicts and create a whole drama film. There is also an idea that there is a young girl coming to a realization about herself. She is finding herself throughout the whole story and figuring herself out and learning the further she goes on. This, in turn, can be a coming of age film of her finding who she is. In the pitch, I mentioned that she will run off with her girlfriend. Everything she does could be for love. Maybe everything will tie into her love for her girlfriend. Having the whole film revolve around love which would make it a romance film. There are so many possible genres for it to fall into. We can't know for sure which one will be the one we go with. Depending on which approach my partner and I take while planning this film we can determine which genre it will be. I will be sharing the research next blog. After evaluating the research an discussing with my partner I will be able to determine the genre of the film.

welcome back!

Welcome back! Its been a while. Its been three months, since you guys have last seen me. Since then I've had a birthday, and am now in a different grade. As you can probably tell, I have decided to take AICE media again. I really enjoyed it last year. So i really hope this year will be just as fun. Im working with a new group this year. Most of my friends are not taking it again this year. But I will be working with my other friends. We came up with the story already. But we are not sure of the genre yet. I think this year will be a little harder. Last year was hard because of scheduling conflicts. But this year were have to social distance and stuff which makes it harder. I think that we could try using plexi glass. so that we can record without masks. We are also gonna record at eachothers houses. And out in public.

Audience and Institutions essay

media area: film
question chosen: 1. assess the importance of marketing in the media area you studied.

Marketing is the study and management of exchange relationships. The way a film is marketed can make it or break it. The way a movie is marketed sets a tone for the movie and how interesting it will be and if it appeals to the audience enough for them to want to see it. One very important marketing tool is the trailer. Trailers are very important because they detail the important events of the movie. They also show the most jam packed parts. Tv advertisements are very important. For example marvel is owned by disney so disney channel advertises marvel content to their viewers most commercial breaks. Marketing is a very effective tool and is actually many companies downfall as to why their movies don't do well in the box office. For example, the movie Jem and the holograms came out in 2015 and their marketing team was not very good. Jem and the holograms ended up making way less than they expected on opening weekend and up getting taken out of theatres nationwide. It has now gotten its come back on netflix, but had they have marketed to people outside of their 90’s kid demographic they probably would have made a lot more. On the contrary a movie that did a great job marketing was avengers endgame. It marketed itself as the end of an era and marvel fans new and old flocked to theatres to watch it when it came out. Making it one of the highest grossing movies of the year. Avengers endgame was on any and every item you can think of because their marketing was that good anywhere you went you could see it: billboards, soup cans, gum containers, and chips. Another movie with amazing marketing was frozen 2. Frozen was already a huge movie when it came out so when it was announced that they were coming out with a sequel people were already excited. Even Though they already had a strong fanbase disney did not stop marketing they put out new toys and were even on food packaging such as: good to grow juice, cheez-its, goldfish crackers, and ritz crackers. Like stated previously marketing is an extremely easy way to guarantee if your movie will succeed or flop, and if done correctly can work miracles.

24 extract essay

Extract essay

I feel like the director was going for a thriller. It had a very eerie feeling to it and the sound definitely played a huge role. Even if I wasn't looking at it I would still be able to tell what was going on. The sound makes the scene seem scary and dark. The lighting also is a huge factor. The lighting and sound work together to create a sense of strange eeriness. The scene in the interrogation room where
the male main character chokes the female one is enhanced by the dark lighting. The camera angles are mostly used to help engage the audience. Thye use a lot of over the shoulder shots which help the audience feel like they are in the room in place of the female character. They also use close ups frequently of the woman which look as if she is looking right at you, because the man's back is to her. The editing is extremely smooth because they use a lot of shot reverse shots. It also uses a sort of voiceover when the police officer outside is telling the male main character to stop choking the female. The mise en scene in this scene is really good. She doesnt have on extravagant makeup and he is dressed like a police officer or detective. The way he is dressed reminds me of the detectives from law and order. The room is also decorated as if it's actually an interrogation room at a police station, and nothing is out of place.

Movie CCR

For my ccr I didn’t know what to do. We were originally going to do a 74 questions by vogue inspired video. Which is on vogues you tube channel. They interview celebrities while getting a tour around their house. But since corona virus we weren’t able to meet up. Then I wanted to asmr. But I thought that would be too weird. When I asked my group they said that it was a bad idea. So then I asked about a grwm and they said that it was a good idea. Grwm means get ready with me by the way. So basically you do your makeup on camera as if you were going somewhere. Sadly I can’t go anywhere but I still thought it was fun. I haven’t done make up on camera before. So I thought it was really fun. I made a lot of mistakes. But it was a cool thing to do for the first time.

Movie

The movie was very hard to film. It was really fun though. I’ve always wanted to act. Acting as a murderer wasn’t what I had in my mind for my first role. But it was fun none the less. We had trouble putting our credits in the correct order because we had to do it over FaceTime. We also tried to recast for our reshoots but with the whole covid-19 thing and being on quarantine we had to keep our old movie. This movie helped us realize that we aren’t really cut out to be directors anytime soon. We actually started filming our new actors but because we couldn’t get the whole movie we thought it would be weird to have somebody be the murderer and someone be interviewed. It didn’t help that we looked completely different too. My favorite thing we filmed was in the study rooms. That day kat and I had a party to go to so I got to her house at 9am then we went to film with everyone. Then we all ended at kats house just watching tv and eating McDonald’s. Then later that night Kat and I went to our party. It was actually one of our media friends sweet sixteen. It was really fun.

Music video

The music video was so easy to film. Personally it was my favorite thing we filmed this year. It was just us hanging out and relaxing. I know a lot of people did the same thing as us. As in hanging out with friends and then turning on a camera. I know the set of actual music videos isn’t like that but it was such a fun environment to be in. We filmed over two weekend and two days. Weekend one is the first scenes with the skateboards and stuff. Then week two is with the bean boozled challenge and the confetti at the end. On weekend two Luisa wasn’t there but our friend Melanie was so it’s fine. On weekend two we had a sleepover at kats house and went to the mall and then out to eat. We also made some brownies that tasted so good. Filming the music video was such a cool experience. It was something fun and enjoyable to do with friends and I definitely enjoyed it. I hope if I take A level media that I have the same experiences as this. I’ve had so much fun in this class.

Filming: home edition

We met up at kats house at 4. We met up with her neighbors. Then we gave them the script. They read over it a few times. We started filming. Then we realized they were messing up a lot. So we gave them the scripts and let them read it. We let read while we weren’t recording. But we told them to act like how they would if we were recording. They are actually pretty good. Well they’re a lot better than me and Luisa anyway. We also took snack breaks. Before we started filming and reading scripts we got to know each other. To loosen up we played a quick game of truth or dare. Kat has some cool sticks that you flip over and it has the dare one one side and truth on the other. We also played a game of volleyball once we were done. We tried to have as much fun as possible because we knew we wouldn’t see each other for a while.

Re-edit:

The girl who was supposed to do our peer review did end up giving it to us. Once she gave it to us we looked it over. Then decided to apply what she said. We also decided to get new actors. We’re going to use some kids who live by Kat. They already agreed to it. So on Saturday or Sunday we are going to meet up. Then we’re going to spend an hour or so going over the script. Then we’re going to film. We’re all going to act as director. I’m really excited for how this will turn out. Then were going to start editing with melina in the class after. One of our biggest problems was that the titles were in the wrong places. Also a lot of titles were missing. We also missed some camera angles. We missed lots of move mats too. But we’re working on fixing it on Sunday. We might try and film on Saturday. We were going to film after school on Friday but Kat and I have a lacrosse game. We can also film on

Reshoot: sad stuff

This weekend we were supposed to reshoot. Our reshoots were supposed to be based on our peer review. The group who was supposed to do our peer review ended up doing someone else’s. We spoke to one of the group members about it. She said she would do it and send it to us. She hasn’t sent it yet. But she does have our film and hopefully she did the sheet over the weekend. We need to film sometime after school if she has done it. We all were busy this weekend too. We just decided there’s some scenes we want to refilm. Then we’ll see what our reviewer said as well. We also want to try and get new actors. It might a little to short notice for that though. If we can’t replace ourselves then we just have to be more serious. We also need to refilm the scenes were I am “stabbing” Luisa. As you can see that the knife never touches her. This weekend I went to the beach with my other friends and filmed some clips for establishing shots. So we could use that and maybe film a beach scene. Kat and I could also film at our lacrosse game on Friday. I also went shopping for some more supplies because we accidentally lost our cop badge so we brought another one.

Peer review

In class we chose numbers. We were then assigned a group to review based on that. We reviewed group number 11. We asked them to send it to us. Even though they had it on a flash drive too. We thought it would be easier to just watch it from our phones. We watched it and then talked about it. We talked about what we liked and didn’t like. Then we rewatched the video. We read the paper and then answered most of the questions. Then we rewatched it one last time. Then we answered the questions on the back. We liked the story of the movie because it was easy to follow. Sadly, some aspects didn’t make sense. Like the part where she got stabbed but it was never mentioned again. There was no blood or anything. I feel like it added nothing to the plot. It would’ve made more sense for her drink to be poisoned. So that she would’ve passed out and been easier to kidnap.

Editing blog:

We started editing in class, this week. We all sat around Melinas computer. Then we told her which scenes go where. We also realized that a lot of the scenes we needed. That would help the story flow were missing. We also realized that it really does look like a student film. We realized that our movie is more of a comedy. So when we do reshoots we need more gore. It resembles more of a children’s movie. We were going for a teen rated r kind of vibe. We sadly missed the mark. So we know that when we do reshoots we need to go big or go home. We also noticed that our horror level is also on the actors too. I am one of the actors and it was hard to stay serious. Since I had a hard time doing that, you could tell we were about to laugh. Which is not a very good look. So next time around we need to act more professionally.

Filming blog: a morning at the library

We all decide the night before that we would film the next day. The night before we were at the library. We decided to meet at 10:00 but my mom works at 10. So i got dropped at kats early. I got there around 9. We then went to party city to buy some supplies. We then met at the library. We all met around 11:15. We asked for the study room and she let us use it. When we got in we saw a white board. So we asked for some pens. We then wrote on the board. We also stuck up pictures. I had printed the pictures before we got there. We waited for Erik and statrted to film. While we were filming we encountered a big problem. Erik and I can not film together. We make eachother laugh way too much. So I sat down while luisa filmed Erik. Then we switched. It was a very good method.

Filming blog: A night at the park

On friday night at 5 we all were supposed to meet at the park. Sadly, I arrived at 5 but everyone else came at 6:30. We had been bad at communicating. But, when everyone else got there we grabbed our supplies. Then we found a good area. We were gonna go far into the park. However, we chose not to. As, no one wanted to walk that far. We stayed right near the entrance. We poured our fake blood into a plastic bag. Then taped it to Luisas body. We had to use a lot of tape because it kept not sticking. We filmed our first scene of us walking twice. Then we started on the murder scene. I had poured fake blood on my hand at the end and grabbed luisas neck. After i had stabbed her to make it seem like she ran away. We also filmed a low angle. So instead of luisa being on the ground and me stabbing (fake) and choking her(fake) . I did it to the camera instead. Then we filmed Luisa falling. It was hard because she was not very good at fake falling. Then we reviewed our footage and it looked great.

Planning blog: storyboard

Making the storyboard was really fun. But hard because we arent artists. You can tell whats going on but the pictures are so funny. We all tried not to laugh when writing it. We also had an easy time because all of our stuff was on google slides. We just copied into picture form. It was hard to convey what we wanted it to look like. We have an idea but because we arent artists we werent able to do it. So we just tried our best. It could be worse so im happy with how ours turned out. We are also starting filming tomorrow, which is so exciting.

planning blog: title design

Titles were one of the harder things about planning. It was hard to remember all the titles. Good thing we wrote them down. We were kind of confused on what production and studio were. We had forgotten which was over the other. But we later figured it out. We realised production is over the studio. We thought that we needed to have different names on each role. But we figured that since it wasn't a real movie and only us three that we should all put our names for whatever we actually did. We also are going to all edit together instead of the two people we put. They will be the main ones but everyone else will help alongside too. But we thought that would be too many names.

planning blog: schedule, health and safety, participants, and location

As a group we spoke last class and discussed our main characters name. We decided to call her Ava because it was cute and easy. We also decided to stay true to real case and call the girl who got murdered Elizabeth. We have made a schedule for february and will be remaking one every month. We are all pretty busy so we can really only meet on saturdays and early release days. We have discussed tips to stay safe. We will also be printing of our scripts. We are going to hand out our scripts on friday at the fair. We are going to make the lines as simple as possible to ensure that everyone can memorise them. We will aslos spend days during class memorising lines.

planning blog:shooting script

Planning for the shooting was a lot harder than we thought. Although we knew what we were going to do. We realised that trying to portray our ideas on paper was hard. It was easy to do the sound script first though. It was fun to plan out the camera angles and what we wanted it to look like. Hearing everyone in the group try to say what they had in their heads was funny. Its hard to explain what your envisioning. We worked really hard on it. We realise now that writing our storyboard is going to be a breeze. Since we have our script already we are basically just drawing it out.

planning blog:sound script

I thought writing a script was going to be easy. Lucky for us we based ours off of a true story. So it was easy to look back and get details. But giving out lines was kind of hard. We thought that since we are only writing two minutes we have to leave some parts up in the air. But we still wanted a well rounded story. My favorite part was writing parts with the grandma. Although she doesn't have a lot of lines i can just imagine a lot of emotion. This is a thriller but we still want raw emotion and feelings. We are so excited to start practicing soon.

Title research: Zodiac

The movie Zodiac had about 23 titles, the first three were the companies then the rest was the actors and the producers, editors, make-up, costumes, and sound/music. The images that were prioritized was the main character's job. This shows that this will be important throughout the movie. It symbolizes that it will be a big part of what the movie is about. Since the Zodiac killer is very known in the United States, I think it will show the postal place (the character's job) receiving their cryptic message. It appeals to the viewers because the Zodiac killer was still relevant and no one ever found out who they were. The music and how it was filmed (like a non-stopping movement) makes it feel chaotic and keeps the viewers attentions because they want to know what happens next but also how this movie will portray the killer and killings that they did.

Title research: Get out

In the movie there were 24 titles in total. The first three were the companies that "made" the movie (as in who owns it and who produced it.) The other titles who split into the actors and the behind-the-scenes people. They were the people that were in charge of casting, makeup, costumes, music, editing, etc. The images that were prioritized was the trees. The importance of the trees is already giving the viewer the idea that at some point in the movie the main characters will be isolated. The trees was most of the beginning which implies that it is lengthy. The beginning is showing the trees and showing the two main characters seeing each other again because one of them picked something up from a bakery and the other is at their house getting ready. It tells the watchers that they might be going somewhere and the trees are telling them that they might be going to a place that is far away or that is secluded. The trees establish an enigma because it seems like miles and miles of trees which gives an eerie effect. Strategies that are used to appeal to its target is the simplicity of the characters. I think that people would rather have relate able characters then over-the-top. But throughout the movie, there are things that you didn't expect to happen, which draws more viewers. The techniques and angles that the directors used gave the beginning a calm feeling. It makes the people watching it not to expect what will happen throughout the movie.

Title research: Venom

There are 17 titles and 7 actors in the opening sequence to the first two minutes of the film venom. The image prioritized in the opening sequence is the main characters antagonist which is the monster. The connotations the image carry is the villain of the story aka the monster. The genre is reinforced through symbolic sounds by the music from the opening sequence and it is reinforced through technical codes by the camera angles and movement they use in it. This film establishes enigma through the images it displays of the characters monster. The strategies used to ensure the film appeals to its target audience are the colorful images and the different editing in the film.

Title research: Halloween

For the opening of the movie Halloween there are 19 titles and 12 actor names displayed on the opening sequence fir that movie. The imagine that is prioritized in the opening is a pumpkin, the image carries a reverse connotation. It goes from a rotten pumpkin to a perfect one. The genre is reinforced though the symbolic codes by sending the watchers to a suspenseful vibe. To get them wondering what the pumpkin stands for and why is it going from a rotten pumpkin to a good one. The genre is reinforced by technical codes by the camera zooming into the pumpkin as it goes back to being a normal carved pumpkin. The film establishes enigma by having the first two minutes be about a pumpkin rotting and the background music having a puzzling affect on the watchers. The strategies used to ensure that the film appeals to its target audience is the carved pumpkin. Since the title of the movie is "Halloween" they use a dark background and a lit up pumpkin to give the audience a thrill as to what is going to happen. The technology was used effectively through their editing techniques and their camera angles. The producers used a zoom affect and they used a reverse time-lapse to give the thrill to the audience.

title research:www.watchthetitles.com

Watch the titles is an opening scene website. Once you click on title sequences, sadly they are not in alphabetical order. They also are not ordered under genres. It also makes it harder to narrow down. You have to open up another tab and search the genre. Or you could look at it and try to guess, which is not very accurate. This website is very pretty. I enjoy the layout. It is easier to use than the last one. I like that the website is separated based on ways to find things. It even has student flims, which i find really cool. Watching the student films can help us see examples from a non-professional perspective

Title research: www.artofthetitle.com

Art of the title is a website that lists most movie opening scenes. They are not listed in alphabetical order. Nor are they ordered by genre. When you are looking for a certain genre kit makes it hard to look for what you want. It also makes it harder to narrow down. It makes you look through all titles and check and see if they are your genre in a separate tab. I do however like how you can kind of narrow it down if you know the designer and studio it came from. But that is kind of a hard thing to know because the names are so specific and i was expecting just a tab with the Big 5 and then a last one with independent. The colors of the website are also really cute too. I like the way the shade of  blue they use and the black and white compliment. The aesthetic is very pretty. For researching titles this website is very reliable. It is also very important.

fractured review

Image result for fractured movie poster
The movie Fractured is a thriller movie where the main character Ray is frantic of the where-abouts of his daughter and wife after the hospital where they stayed at claims that they are not there. The setting of the movie is in a hospital away from big cities. The costumes in Fractured are winter clothes, hospital uniforms, and police uniforms (it is the most common throughout the movie.) An important piece of clothing is the daughter's yellow coat. There are a lot of close ups and medium close-ups. There are scenes where actors are talking so they camera would do a shot reverse shot and show their body movement. Another edit in the movie was action match. This was mostly used the hospital when Ray was searching for his family. The sound is the movie was digetic, non-digetic music and dialogue. There was music in some parts of the movie to add an dramatic effect and to keep the viewer on edge. The elements that I like are that you think that you know how it will end but there was many plot twists. An element that I did not like was that there are some parts of the movie that I have questions on but were never answered. I think that this is a good element because the viewer is still drawn to the movie after the movie but for me personally, I rather know everything and not wonder what happens next.

47 metres down review

In the movie the CAMS and CLAMPS are mostly the same throughout the movie. The setting is in the ocean. The main props is the shark cage and the oxygen tanks that the two main characters are wearing. The makeup is very minimum since they are underwater for most of the movie. The lighting is dim but clear. The lighting does not change much because they are at the bottom of the ocean. The actors are in a panic because they can't get back up. The angles were high and low. Throughout the movie the viewer sees the actors from inside the cage or swimming in the ocean. There were also a lot of tracking shots. I think that there was a lot of movement because the ocean isn't still. The most common angles that appeared in the movie were low angles, and medium close ups. The lighting was often dark. It was mostly kept dark because they were stuck under water most of the time. The only few times it was light was before they went into the tank and when Lisa faces hallucinations about escaping.

genre research

The first genre that we research was Drama. The genre is usually a main character in a serious setting and they have a conflict. The viewer can see all the highs and lows of the character. There are intense situations throughout the movie. Drama movies make the viewers feel empathy for the characters because there are intense emotions. The CLAMPS are different depending on the setting and plot of the movie. The genre has dramatic elements. For example, drama movies are historical or based on something that is true.

you get me review

For another one of our reviews we chose You get me. The genres are crime, romance, and thriller. The camera angles mostly used are high, medium close up, closeups, and Dutch/canted. The movements are mostly zooms, pans and very little tilts. The most common sounds were dialogue, footsteps, leaves crunching, and school bells ringing etc. The editing was very seemless and they used a lot of jump cuts, fade ins and outs, and action matches. The movie was mainly about Tyler and Holly. Tyler has an amazing girlfriend named Ally but they break up and he meets Holly. They both have a one night stand but Holly becomes obsessed. One thing I didn't like is that it falls under the crazy ex lover trope, which is often used in movies targeted towards teenagers. One thing I did like is that it had a very good soundtrack and I feel like those are very important. I also liked the casting choices because those are extremely important to how a movie flows.

why horror?

For our genre we chose horror and thriller. We chose these because they are easiest to be portrayed. Within two minutes, it would be hard to do a romcom or comedy. We also really like watching American horror story. Which is a horror/ thriller too. We are going to use most of the same angles they use. They mostly use high angles, tracking shots, and sometimes trunk shots.

facts about our genre

In our last blog, which was about our PowerPoint research on the drama genre. We know have decided on two other genres to write about and do some research on that too. We chose thriller and horror. We chose them because they both have similar movies made for the genre. Our main one will be thriller since our movie will be based on the thriller genre. Camera Angles used in thrillers are high angles, close up shots, tilted angles, and long shots. Some camera movements are tracking, panning, zoom, and dolly. Some shots are over the shoulder shot, point of view shot, hand held shot, and wide shot. Some costumes for thrillers are normal clothing type, such as normal daily outfits you would wear to school, to work, anything of that type. For the lighting, since most thriller and horror movies are more dark and have the scary and suspenseful affect on its audience the lighting that is  most commonly used is low-key lighting. Other common ones are back lighting, filler light, under lighting, and high-key lighting. For make-up and hair, most thrillers may be seen as normal and natural makeup but some thrillers may use special affects makeup for their film. Now for our props, many thriller films have the main plot be death. which would lead to them using weapons and such things as their props. The props may vary from a computer to a gun or a blanket to a plate. It all varies from what your plot is. Many props have to fit their antagonist personality. If the they are more violent they would use something bigger and stronger, if they are less violent they might use something small. Lastly for our setting, the thriller genre most commonly uses abandoned houses, forests, dark alleys, empty streets, and any dark area outside to set the mood for their setting. Some common editing in thriller movies are jump cuts, titles, elliptical editing, graphic math and parallel editing. Some thriller film examples would be Jaws, Get out, IT, Us, The Joker and many other films in that genre. Thriller movies use music, sound affects, dialogue and silence. They all combine to give that suspenseful vibe to the movie. Some elements that appealed to me were that the protagonist and antagonist battle at some point of the film, and that at one point a character will be dragged into a very dangerous situation that they had no clue was coming. Some elements i didnt like were that sometimes the main characters always die.
